Innovation On Site Ltd had the opportunity to showcase ‘Innovative Methods of Construction’ this year at the national SkillBuild competition held at the Leeds College of Building. Thanks to a partnership with Construction Skills, SmartLIFE and the Innovative Construction Skills forum, Innovation On Site was able to demonstrate a timber frame structure being constructed aided by students from Leeds.
The demonstration included a total of 16 construction students taking part in the build of a timber frame structure over the duration of the 3-day event. The interactive exhibition mirrored an on-site construction experience for the students and spectators with the use of a crane to move the panels into place.
Very few further education (FE) colleges are currently teaching innovative methods of construction and are continuing to only teach traditional skills;
David Arkell, head of Innovation & Partnerships at Cambridgeshire County Council commented, “This event has been a great opportunity for SmartLIFE to demonstrate new and innovative methods of building for students to participate in and consider as a career path.
